Mr Xu 许先生

I am a postdoctoral fellow at Wuhan University, currently working at the University of Hong Kong. Before coming to HKU, I worked in Wuhan for a period of time. My research field is geography, specifically urban geography. I mainly analyze the distribution and development of cities in space, which is a very interesting and important research direction.

In my research, we use a lot of advanced technologies. For example, we use remote sensing technology, mainly satellite images. This allows us to observe the entire city from a high altitude and see its changes. We also use geographic information systems, a powerful tool that can help us integrate and analyze various geographic data.

Our workflow is usually like this: we collect satellite images from different time points, possibly from a few years ago or even decades ago. Then we carefully analyze these images to see how the city has expanded in space. This allows us to track the development of the city and understand how it has changed over time.

At the University of Hong Kong, I am doing postdoctoral research in the School of Architecture. This might sound a bit strange—a geographer working in the School of Architecture. But in fact, urban geography and architecture have many intersections. Here, I continue to study what I did at Wuhan University, but with new perspectives and methods.

As a global scientist, my research involves many aspects. I am particularly interested in brownfields. Brownfields are lands that were once used for industrial or commercial purposes but may now be polluted and abandoned. This is a very important topic in urban planning and sustainable development. How to reuse these lands and how to carry out environmental remediation are questions we need to think about.

Each city has its unique challenges and opportunities. Beijing and Hong Kong are two good examples; their urban structures and development patterns are very different. My job is to study these different urban patterns, understand how they were formed, and how they change over time.

Overall, my research aims to understand how cities develop and how to better plan our urban spaces. This involves not only geography but also environmental science, sociology, and many other disciplines. We need to consider many factors, such as population distribution, economic activities, transportation networks, green space planning, and so on.

Our ultimate goal is to create more livable and sustainable urban environments. This means that we need to pay attention not only to the physical structure of the city but also to the quality of life of its residents. We hope that our research can provide valuable references for urban planners and policymakers, helping them make better decisions.

This work is full of challenges but also very meaningful. Every time I see a city become better because of good planning, I feel very gratified. This is why I love my job and why I choose to continue to work in this field.
